What is the Invisible Office?

Baby BirdOne of the reasons I use the analogy of the “invisible office” is because I mean it both literally and figuratively. When you think of an office, you most likely first thing of a building. The first image that comes to mind is my first job: a lawyer’s office in an old building that had been converted to office space. Once upon a time it was a barber shop: imagine a large, long narrow building with a few walls and office doors added. It was a very unique place, with the two outermost walls being brick.

I had been there for about a year when a bird got inside the siding on the back of the building and got into the hollow space in the wall and had eggs. The bird was able to fly in and out at first, but then became trapped and the eggs hatched. At first we thought we were all crazy hearing birds chirping. The building manager finally came and cut open the wall to get them out.

So when you are running your own office, you might be going it alone.

You might need help, (like the birds) but are apprehensive of the saw.

Or, you might have people working for you, but be in a growth state where you need to lose some people or add some more (like changing a vintage barber shop into a lawyer’s office).

Or, you might be in a corporate position and need help figuring out what to do about a wall in one of your tenant’s spaces.

So where does it become invisible? Neatly, inside the walls.

As in a building, there are multiple wires and other infrastructure elements that go into making everything work. One hour without water and you’re looking at a crisis. You can think about your people the same way. To your customers you want everything to look polished and completed. They don’t really need to know what goes on inside the walls to get the job done. The fact is simple: if you have shoddy walls (or employees) the building won’t stand up. Binding your business together where it almost runs invisibly like the water in the pipes and the electricity at the flick of a switch is when the office becomes invisible.

The right employee can make all the difference. But hiring the right person isn’t luck. It takes careful planning: determining what purpose they serve, a well-written job ad, recruiting in the right places. These all fall into place to find your right hire at the right time, so they fit into your organization as if they were destined to be there.

So, how can we work together?

As part of my coaching practice, I work with clients of all sizes: from a staff of one to multi-national firms. Together, we can dissect current or potential employee negotiations, build a structure for developing your human resources department, or hash out an immediate business issue facing your company. I also maintain access to HR Legal Databases that allow me to research specific states and areas. Designed to be flexible enough to fit into your business model, but reliable enough to deliver you clear and consistent results, coaching with heart, and direct insight into the human element of your operation.
